The proverbial backpack that Mr. Hoch is talking about is the Hatchback, the A5 sport back, um, sports. If Audi’s designers had just started with A4 and expanded the Hatchback into a single line, they would have landed with something like the BMW 3 GT Series – a bigger Hatchback without elegance. Instead, they wanted the A7 children, with the grace and beauty of this car.
To achieve this goal, launched the Audi design team under the direction of Frank Lamberty with the A4 ‘s wheelbase to obtain the appropriate length (it is 2.4 inches longer than the A5), and then used the A5 as a design inspiration from the A-pillars back. Effectively, this meant lowering the 1.7 inch of the line, extending the coupe-like profile almost to the rear spoiler, frameless side windows with the rear Sprilla ice fruit from the A7 and using the more dramatic side sculpture of the coupe.
The result is a car that fits in with the rear space between coupé and sedan and even surpasses the sedan when it comes to general practicality. Compared to the A5/S5 coupé, the back 0.4 has more inches of front-head space, 0.9 inches more rear-head space, and 2.4 more inch rear leg room. The head space and the leg space are both within 0.6 of the measurements of the sedan, but the sedan has a 13 cubic metre trunk, while the back 21.8 cubic feet provides rear loading space in its Lukenbereich and can open up to 35 cubic feet, with the Rear seats are folded downwards.
How does this work for people and their freight? In addition to their appearance, the A5 sports backs are more athletic than A4, 1.1 inches lower than the sedan, at virtually the same height as S4 and A5, and have front and rear track widths about half the width of the sedan track.
The rest of the story is pure A4 / S4, powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 252 hp and 273 hp torque. The engine transfers from the same 7-speed dual concept transmission to the same Audi Quattro four-wheel drive system that has the same 40/60 front / rear gearbox and can deliver 70 percent back or 85 percent power. . Unlike the A5, it does not offer a Quattro Ultra that can close the front axle with easy loading to save fuel.
Behind S5 is motivated by the same 3.0-liter V-6 turbocharger as the S4 and produces the same torque of 354 PS and 369 lb-ft. It has the same 8-stage automation and is also the Quattro standard. At the same time, it offers the same sports package as mechanical differential torque control, red calipers and adaptive shock absorbers. As with S4, the receivers may select an active routing system having a variable ratio between 10.5: 1 and 25: 1 instead of the standard 15.9: 1.
On the road, all this hardware turns the A5 sport back into a sporting, balanced, smooth fahrenauto with just enough power for a luxury grand tourer. The 0-60 sprint lasts 5.7 seconds, and the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission moves quickly, albeit with a little lumpiness. The car rides well on its standard 18-inch wheels and ensures fresh-fun through corners.
The S5 adds a little more flavor. The V-6 cuts the 0-60 mph time to 4.5 seconds and provides a compliant well of performance whenever it is needed. The 8-speed rate offers smoother, faster shifts, and the adaptive suspension makes the ride with the optional 19er as smooth as you can get in the A5 back with your 18 gauge years. The available torque-vectoring-Heckdiff also helps in handling by improving the neutral, rear drive character of the vehicle by selecting a sub-control.

The A5/S5 backing deserves its place in the A4/A5 formation. The lines are coupe-like, but not as sexy as those of the A5 coupe, and with less real estate to play, they are not quite as graceful as on the A7.
