2022 Audi S5 You see, just as much as I love the 444 horsepower Audi RS5 Sportback, it’s just a little too buttoned for its own good. And after a week with the 349-hp S5 Sportback, I can’t imagine why you’d need anything more.
This top-tier Prestige trim has the $ 2,500 S Sports Package add-on, which is a pretty solid upgrade. You get a stiffer suspension with adaptive dampers, although it’s not so harsh that it will punish you for the road expansion joint.
But the real reason to go for this option is the sport rear differential, which adds a torque vector to the rear axle. And since the Quattro’s all-wheel-drive system has a rear bias, this makes the S5 a little more lively in tight corners. You can never mistake it for a rear-wheel-drive car, but it’s a good thing.
And if you live in cold weather conditions, stick a set of winter tires on this bad boy and turn it on when the streets are empty after the fresh snow.
In addition to the usual Comfort, Auto, and Dynamic settings, Audi Drive Select has a customizable Individual mode, which I use all the time. My favorite way to drive the S5 is with the chassis at its softest setting, steering in Dynamic, and engine in Auto.
There’s a variable-ratio Dynamic Steering option you can add for $ 1,500, and I like the way it speeds up the response in the most sportive settings, even though it’s pretty light in the default Comfort mode.
2022 Audi S5 Redesign
The best thing about the S5 Sportback is a trait I find in other Audi S cars: excellent balance. In the world of entry-level luxury sports sedans, the 2022 S5 Sportback delivered competitive results on our test track but was unable to compete with its competitors in terms of driving. The Sportback sits between the softer A5 Sportback and the rocket ship RS5 Sportback.
Under the hood of the S5 Sportback sports a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that produces a healthy 349 horsepower, which is sent to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Despite offering fast acceleration and nimble handling, the S5 Sportback ultimately failed to get us excited the way the Mercedes-AMG C43 and BMW M340i did.
The S5 Sportback offers more practicality than a sports sedan, however, thanks to a smart integrated hatchback; The one-piece rear liftgate opens to reveal a large cargo area, making it a more functional alternative to coupes and convertible cars.
The S5 Sportback gets more features as standard in various trims and packages for the 2022 model year. All S5 trims get an Audi smartphone interface with Apple CarPlay wireless, lane departure alerts, and an integrated toll road payment transmission feature as standard equipment.

Everything I love about the RS5 Sportback carries over to the S5. It looks good, it’s quiet, it’s comfortable, the technology is really good and you can throw a lot of stuff behind thanks to the hatch.
The S5’s 3.0-liter turbo V6 produces 349 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque, which is a lot, and with Quattro all-wheel drive and a fast eight-speed automatic transmission, the S5 will hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Yes, the RS5 Sportback will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, but unless you regularly bring your luxury four-door hatchback to the track (you don’t), that 0.7-second difference means the next. become meaningless in the real world.
Also, one of my main complaints about the perfect RS5 is that it’s somewhat sterile – like sure, fast, but no raw emotion. The S5 is like this too, but it fits a little better in what is supposed to be a mid-performance car. There’s a big difference between the Mercedes-AMG C43 and C63, but the S5 and RS5 always feel very similar.
The 3.0 liter V6 S5 is a fine machine. There’s plenty of low-end torque and the double scroll turbocharger spins quickly to provide an on-demand boost. Having fun with the engine also doesn’t completely save you fuel.

Replacing the 3.0 liter, turbo V-6 is more powerful and torquier than the supercharged engine that came on the last generation S5. It accelerates quickly from stopping and overtakes other drivers on the highway with ease. Despite following the Mercedes-AMG C43’s 4.1-second zero-to-60 mph time, the last S5 model we tested still managed an impressive 4.3-second sprint.
The eight-speed automatic performed admirably, but a preference for second gear began when in Comfort mode exacerbated the engine’s initial turbo lag and made the S5 drowsy. Tap the Drive Select switch from Comfort mode and into Dynamic or Auto mode, however, and the S5 Sportback comes to life, excitedly leaving a line in first gear. Likewise, the transmission is reluctant to lower the Comfort mode.
Again, switching to Dynamic or Automatic mostly fixes this problem. Our test car is equipped with optional 19-inch performance tires and the S Sport package, which includes a torque vector rear differential and adaptive dampers.
These parts together give the S5 Sportback a sturdy yet forgiving ride and lots of grips when cornering.
2022 Audi S5 EPA
The EPA predicts the 2022 S5 Sportback will deliver 20/27 mpg city/highway. Those figures are down from the previous year’s model when Audi was rated at 21/30 mpg.
While we haven’t tested the Sportback S5 2022 on our real-world highway fuel-efficient routes, the last one we evaluated delivered 33 mpg during that test.
2022 Audi S5 Price and Release Date
We’ll be using the mid-range Premium Plus model which, after adding more standard features for the 2022 model year, seems to offer a nice added balance for the price.
Items such as a 12.3-inch digital gauge screen, blind-spot monitoring with rear traffic alerts, built-in navigation, passive entry, wireless smartphone charging pad, leather upholstery, massage front seats, and front and rear automatic emergency braking are all standard.
The only options we will splurge on are the performance-enhancing ones. The Black Optic package (black exterior trim, 20-inch wheels, performance summer tires) and the S Sport package (red brake calipers, adaptive damping, and torque vector rear differential) both provide enough enhancements to significantly improve vehicle handling. The S5 Sportback is a really good all-rounder that’s hard to beat. Its main rivals are the BMW 440i Gran Coupe and the Kia Stinger GT unless you want to broaden your thinking to include crossovers that, well, don’t.
BMW is quite old at the moment and I’m not sure Audi buyers are open-minded enough to consider stopping by a Kia dealer just yet, no matter how cool the Stinger is. Truth be told, the S5 Sportback’s closest competitor is another Audis – namely the S4 sedan or, in fact, the crossover SQ5.
But I do have the S5 Sportback on top of those two options. I would have it on top of the RS5 hot-shot anyway.
