2024 Audi S5: Next-Gen Audi S5 Luxury Car Ultimate Review

2024 Audi S5 while the Audi S4 and S5 are basically the same under the skin, there’s a bit of fault with both. That’s thanks to the S5’s exterior—much sleeker and style-focused, whether it’s a coupe, convertible, or four-door Sportback. Audi introduced the original S5 for the 2008 model year and the second generation in 2020.

Because it combines performance and luxury in an impressive manner, the Audi S4 is well-liked. But to some style-conscious drivers, this may seem too simplistic. A solution? S5.

While they are largely identical in terms of performance and features, there is little comparison between the designs of the S4 and S5. Where the S4 is familiar and quiet, the S5 is encased in sleek and evocative sheet metal.

What’s more, the S5 can be had in the ultra-practical Sportback four-door hatchback body style, in addition to the fashionable coupe and indulgent convertible format.

Regardless of how it’s ordered, the S5 is fast and high-end. It’s not the most immersive and involved drive—Audi built the RS5 for it—but with its performance, luxury, and style, the S5 is hard to resist.

2024 Audi S5 Review

To make the S5 Sportback, Audi grabbed the 349-hp S5 coupe at both ends and stretched it to accommodate more passenger space, four doors, and a liftgate hatchback. Both S5s use the same turbocharged V-6 bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission that pushes power to Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system.

2024 Audi S5

The sleek S5 Sportback impresses on winding roads and, while its powerful powertrain can move quickly, its delivery feels a bit muzzled. Sharper competitors like the BMW M340i and Mercedes-AMG C43 are fiercer and more fun to drive.

The S5’s massive hatchback liftgate makes loading cargo easy but compared to the mechanically identical S4 sedan, the Sportback’s rear legroom is lacking. That’s the price of style, and the slick S5 Sportback has plenty.

We continue to be amazed by the balance of the S5 Sportback. Convenience is as important as performance. The front seats are very supportive and pleasant, and the available heating and ventilation elements work quickly.

Easy-to-use climate control maintains cabin temperature accurately, and fans are not too noisy, even at high temperatures.

The optional adaptive suspension is a great way to go on the S5 as it offers excellent quality for a variety of scenarios. Comfort mode smoothes rough roads and damaged pavement with ease, while Dynamic mode keeps body movement under control through vibrant driving. The S5 is relatively quiet at all speeds and is well-isolated from road noise and wind.

2024 Audi S5 Refresh

received minor updates to set it apart from last year’s model. The new look package of the Black Optic Plus S5 Sportback includes more black elements such as a black spoiler and exhaust tip. Adaptive cruise control is added to the optional Comfort package.

The Audi Sport interior package will add red stitching and RS carbon inlays to the S5 Sportback’s black interior. Lastly, the Quantum Gray paint option has been replaced by Chronos Grey.

2024 Audi S5 Specs

Audi is offering the S5 as a coupe, convertible, and four-door hatchback called the Audi Sportback. A typical upgrade on the base A5 is an upgrade from four to six cylinders, with all S5 models powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6.

Along with the increase in power comes a wider range of standard features such as massaged front seats with layered upholstery and a more aggressive exterior appearance.

The two-door Audi S5’s closest rival is the BMW M440i, while the four-door Acura TLX Type S is the S5 Sportback’s rival. Both BMW and Acura are equal in power and performance, but Audi has the upper hand when it comes to design.

We tested the S5 Sportback, which is a four-door hatchback. There’s a lot of power from the turbocharged V6 though it doesn’t explode right away. Once moving, the acceleration is fast, steady, and satisfying.

Our S5 Sportback test car was able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a quick 4.3 seconds. The brakes work well to stop all those speeds, and offer relatively fade-free performance in dynamic situations, but are equally easy and work seamlessly during leisurely rides.

The S5 is also capable of cornering. Our cars come with the optional S Sport package. This helps to combine the best of all-wheel-drive traction with the nimble feel of a rear-wheel-drive car. The S5’s dynamic steering also feels great to match whatever driving mode setting you’re using.

S5 vs RS5

If the S5 is sporty, the RS5 is even more so. Although the RS5’s V-6 engine is smaller, at 2.9 liters, it gains an additional turbocharger for a total of 444 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. Similar to the S5, it uses an eight-speed automatic and Quattro AWD.

However, the RS5 is slightly faster than the S5, sprinting to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Grippier too, for posting an average yield of 0.98 g on the skidpad, higher than the S5’s 0.95 g figure.

If the RS5 wasn’t special enough, Audi also offers the 2023 RS5 Competition with slightly faster acceleration and massively improved handling.

2024 Audi S5 Interior

The interior of the S5 Sportback features high-quality materials, the best fit-and-finish, and an ergonomically friendly design. Despite the low roofline, the Sportback is relatively spacious.

2024 Audi S5

Those looking for more interior space will be better served by the less swoopy but mechanically identical Audi S4, which includes nearly 0.5 inches more legroom for rear-seat passengers.

Every S5 Sportback has luxuries like front seats with heating and massage functions, three-zone climate control, a sunroof, and a passive entry with a start button. Thanks to its hatchback body style, the Sportback is extremely versatile and has one of the most spacious trunks in the segment.

We put six carry-on luggage in the back with the rear seats up and 16 suitcases with the seats folded. Cabin storage space for small items like cell phones and sunglasses is limited, which is average for the class.

The S5 Sportback comes standard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, which replaces the 8.3-inch center screen. The new system is still available with built-in navigation and wireless device charging.

Still, it no longer includes a rotary controller in the center console which is more intuitive than touch input. Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, voice control, and Bluetooth phone and audio are standard.

2024 Audi S5 Tech

The graphics of Audi’s 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system are clear and vibrant. Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, a fully configurable digital instrument panel, is capable of displaying almost anything you could want with as much information as you want.

The navigation system is simple and easy to use. Voice control works pretty well, and while it doesn’t quite speak, the commands are close and have a wide range of functionality. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard.

Most of the S5 Sportback’s advanced driver safety aids are optional except for the upper Prestige trim, which is a bit of a disappointment. But they all worked smoothly in our tests.

2024 Audi S5 Engine

Replacing the 3.0 liter, the turbo V-6 is more powerful and torquey than the supercharged engine of the same capacity that came in the last generation S5. It accelerates quickly from a stop, and overtaking other drivers on the highway is easy.

While it trailed the Mercedes-AMG C43 with a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.1 seconds, the last S5 model we tested still managed an impressive 4.3-second sprint. The eight-speed automatic transmission works very well, but its preference for starting second gear while in Comfort mode exacerbates the engine’s initial turbo lag and makes the S5 sleepy.

Tap the Select Drive switch to exit Comfort mode and into Dynamic or Auto mode, and the S5 Sportback comes alive, eagerly leaving the line in first gear. Likewise, the transmission is reluctant to go down to Comfort mode. Again, switching to Dynamic or Automatic mostly fixes this issue.

Our test car was equipped with optional 19-inch performance tires and the S Sport package, which includes a torque vector rear differential and adaptive dampers. These pieces together provide the S5 Sportback with a strong but forgiving ride and plenty of cornering grip.
