What We Think
We’re glad that Audi has expanded the basic active driver assistance features in its lineup this year, as this was one of our main complaints.
All that remains is some additional NVH tuning to reduce tire noise, slightly better fuel economy, and a heavier steering wheel. You can’t go wrong with the S5 luxury compact if you want a little more personality and capability than the S4.
The S5 reaches the pinnacle of Audi’s small vehicle portfolio in several ways. More attractive than the S4, and more powerful than the standard A5, but not as crazy as the RS5, the car is available as a practical and athletic fastback sedan. The navigation system is basic and easy to use. The voice controls work well, and while they aren’t completely conversational, the commands are near and have a wide range of tasks. Smartphone interaction with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard.
Storage
The cargo area under the hatch in the back of the S5 Sportback is spacious. The rear seats’ 40/20/40 split helps provide versatility for odd-sized goods. The cargo area is free of intrusions, and the load height is adequate.
The cabin’s storage for minor goods is barely adequate. There are two little pockets in the middle console area that can hold a phone, keys, or credit cards.
The middle console bin can hold a wallet and other small items, but nothing larger. Because the cupholders are on the small side, don’t expect to stop for a Big Gulp.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Audi’s latest infotainment software, which is shown on a high-mounted 10.1-inch touchscreen, is standard on every S5. Voice recognition and steering-wheel controls are also available, but the intuitive rotary controller in the center console has been removed.

2024 Audi S5 Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The same 349-hp turbocharged V-6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive are standard on all S5s. The latest S5 coupe we drove had solid acceleration in a class of swift alternatives because of its launch-control system and all-wheel-drive traction.
It moved from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds in our testing. Despite the extra weight, the convertible S5 cabriolet we tested was nevertheless rather fast, reaching 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
The optional 19-inch performance tires and the S Sport package, which includes a torque-vectoring rear differential and adjustable dampers, were installed on both of the two-door S5s we drove.
Our test vehicles’ rides were firm but nonetheless comfortable. The coupe also came with Dynamic Steering, which quickens steering when the wheel is turned further from the center.
However, we found the system to be uncommunicative and unpredictable; we recommend that you stick with the usual fixed-ratio steering setup.
Performance
We drove a four-door hatchback, the S5 Sportback. The turbocharged V6 has plenty of power, even if it isn’t immediately explosive off the line. Once underway, acceleration is quick, steady, and pleasurable.
Our S5 Sportback test car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. The brakes do a good job of bringing all that speed to a halt, with reasonably fade-free performance in dynamic conditions, but they’re also easy and smooth to use on a daily commute.
The S5 is also capable around corners. The optional S Sport package was installed on our vehicle. It combines the best of all-wheel-drive traction with the responsiveness of a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. The dynamic steering in the S5 also feels perfectly matched to the drive mode setting you’re in.
Comfort
The S5 Sportback’s balance continues to astound us. Comfort is just as important as performance. The front seats are extremely supportive and comfortable, and the available heated and ventilated elements operate quickly.
The simple climate control accurately maintains the cabin temperature, and the fans aren’t too loud, even on high.
The optional adaptive suspension in the S5 is a superb option because it provides exceptional attributes in a variety of situations. Comfort mode easily smooths out bumpy interstates and broken pavement, while Dynamic mode controls body motion during enthusiastic driving.
At all speeds, the S5 is relatively quiet and well-isolated from road and wind noise.
