Audi Sport, the performance division based in Neckarsulm of Audi, is opening another market segment with the RS5 Sportback, a version 444-HP of the Sportback A5. It serves as a consolation prize for those of us who legitimately regret that the RS4 Avant will not be offered in America. Under the skin, the two models are practically identical.
We won’t discuss with Audi’s decision that America’s market potential for RS5 Sportback is considerably higher than that of a hypothetical federal vanguard RS4. Today, the station wagons occupy the smallest of places, while sedans and elegant hatchbacks sell much better.
The angulation of the last Sportback may seem somewhat strange in the lower A5 models, but it works on the RS5, which comes with large, fender flare blocks destined to evoke the original Audi Quattro which was launched in 1980 and took the world of rallies by the Torm Enta.

The engine is coupled to an eight-speed ZF-source automatic transmission and a biased all-wheel drive system with a 40/60 front/rear torque distribution by default, although as much as 85 percent of the available torque or just 30 can be routed to the front axle. A torque-vectoring rear differential is optional. There are several chassis configurations. The standard configuration is already lower than the A5 ‘s, but there is an additional sport suspension melody as an option. Dynamic handling is also available, as are carbon-ceramic brake rotors.
Inside, the RS5 Sportback comes with specific RS sports seats, RS indicators in the digital cluster, and an abundance of Rs logos, so you don’t forget that you opted for the wildest mid-sized hatchback on the market. The large hatch reveals a large cellar that is almost as spacious as a station wagon. Audi introduces the RS5 Sportback in the new York Auto Show as it will hit the North American markets first, in the second half of 2018 as a 2019 model. The rest of the world, including Europe, will be served at a later date.
The S5 ‘s interior is marked by soft-to-touch, face-feeling materials, high quality trim and finish, and a friendly ergonomic design. In general, it is one of our favorites among its competitive set.
The driver and front passenger are treated to comfortable and spacious can-adjustable seats, while rear-seat riders leave themselves with clean minimum of space acceptable. Those who need more space for the rear seat should look at the four-door S5 Sportback, which sits on a longer wheelbase and offers more space for rear passengers.
S5 ‘s interior begins with a conservative but modern instrument panel design that is parted together with laser-tight precision. Ergonomically placed controls and high-quality materials give the S5 an understated but luxurious touch. In addition, each S5 includes luxuries such as heated and massage front seats, three-zone climate control, and start pushbutton.

Modern cabins do an excellent job of isolating passengers from ambient noise, but none can completely eliminate the sharp wind sound and the tyre noise buzz when you are traveling at the speed of the freeway. To measure the internal sound pressure level, we use a Brüel & Kjær Type 2250-L sound meter, which we position in the center of the first row of seats at the height of the driver’s ear. The meter automatically averages 15 seconds of sound in weighted decibels (DBA), taken while the test car is sailing at 70 mph. (A-weight is an industry standard that adjusts decibel readings to better reflect how the human ear hears several frequencies.) We take two measurements and average the results.
We also correct the inaccuracies of the speedometer with our GPS-based data loggers. It should be noted that the decibels are a logarithmic unit, so a rating of 40 decibels is not twice the sound pressure of 20 decibels; It’s 10 times the sound pressure. A six-decibels increase roughly bends the sound pressure.
