This totally new S5 resembles its predecessor so closely that it looks more like an update to a complete redesign, but Audi says the sheet is completely different. If the car of the previous generation ate nothing but cottage cheese and ran five miles a day for a month, as a boxer trying to make weight, he had come out looking like this model 2018. The most aggressive sports of the body broader arches of the wheel, a sharper front end, and the edges of the vegetable drawer where there used to be smooth curves. The grille is flatter, and the headlights and taillights look more elegant and angry. The result maintains the same general form, but presents a more traditional look.
Visual distinctions between S5 and A5 are even less obvious. The metal trim around the lower air intakes appears more prominently, the dual exhaust tips on each side replaces the low car single units, the back wins a diffuser, the grill slats are slightly adjusted, Mirror caps is metallic rather than body color, and the wheel designs are more distinctive. The most significant difference, of course, is the engine and the transmission.

Both a 7.0-inch desktop display and a 7.0-inch screen separate from the caliber cluster are standard on S5 Premium Plus. Opting for the $2600 navigation package or stepping up the S5 Prestige Trim adds an 8.3 inch central console entertainment display with a board navigation system, as well as a 12.3-inch digital caliber Cluster display that Audi calls virtual cockpit.
Although the standard entertainment system cannot be paired with board navigation, it is Apple display and Android Auto compatible, offers voice control, and includes Bluetooth phone and audio. Navigation is included with the updated entertainment system, which includes a larger 8.3-inch screen on the board and a 12.3-inch digital caliber cluster.
Our S5 coupe and Cabriolet test cars came equipped with the largest entertainment system, which includes navigation. It offered quick response times to user commands. Inputs are made by operating the Audi MMI control knob. A touchpad at the top of the MMI control knob gives users another way to command navigation features, call phonebook entries, and more.

Audi has improved the functionality of the convertible canopy with the new model. The car of the previous generation had to be parked and the driver had to hold a button up to the top was completely upward or downward. Now the top can be opened or closed with a single touch of a button while driving at speeds up to 31 mph. We measured its operation in 18 seconds to open and 21 to close, both being longer times than Audi demands.
The interior is exactly what we have come to expect from an Audi in 2018, with high quality materials and a lot of fancy ornaments. Our test car used a beautiful arrangement of quilted red magma leather, bright carbon-fiber inlays, soft-touch door panels, and superior metal accents. The layout is streamlined and clean, yet logically placed and located. The buttons and dials feel great, and the setting and the end is Top-Shelf.

A high-performance variant S in the coupe and Cabriolet versions is offered to appeal to driving enthusiasts with a craving for great power and luxury. The 3.0-liter V6 supercharged offers stellar performance, with 333 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. Exterior options include pearl or metal paint finishes and comfort seating; Black Optics Package adds high-brightness black detailing. Inside, the luxury details are in abundance, from the heated Napa leather seats with position memory to the front to a complete set of technology and safety features on the Progressiv or Technik trim lines. New last year, an enhanced navigation package includes speech recognition. Unfortunately, the RS5 is discontinued.
The 2018 S5 Cab has a new turbocharged 3.0-Liter V6 making 354 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With a new one-touch opening button, the S5 Cabriolet gets the wind in your hair faster than the previous model. Traction on all wheels is standard.

The real teacher in the S5 Cabriolet, one of the recent great successes of Audi, is the virtual cabin, which comes in the completely worthwhile navigation package $2,600. The system makes use of a large LCD in place of a traditional instrument cluster together with a center LCD on the dashboard. You could change the display of the instrument cluster between a satellite view map, large virtual meters, audio and travel information. It’s a beautiful display and makes it easy to keep my eyes centered on the road.
Audi enjoys a solid record of car manufacturing that combines excellent sports performance and innovative technology in the cockpit, and the 2018 Audi S5 Cabriolet is no exception. However, it also orders a Premium price, based on $62,300. The host of options in the example I drove put the total on $70,625.

That said, there is little I would change about the load option in this car. The navigation package, in $2,600, brings in the virtual cabin together with Android Auto and Apple display, integrated into the Audi MMI navigation system. The $2.500 S Sport package adds adaptive suspension and torque vector, essential for performance conduction. Even $950 for the enhanced Bang and Olufsen audio system, with its 20 speakers, looks like a bargain. Maybe I’ll drop the 19-inch tire package and save $800.
For those who do not love a soft-top, like me, the S5 coupe bases at $54,600, hitting eight big top. And, of course, Audi offers the A5 model less powerful in Cabriolet and coupe formats, with the same electronic cabin options.
