2022 Audi A8: What We Know So Far
2022 Audi A8 Audi’s largest and most luxurious sedan – the 2022 A8 – hides its expensive cabin behind a pretty yet understated façade. From a distance, it’s easy to mistake this six-digit sedan for the humble A4, but that kind of anonymity might actually appeal to the more restrained millionaire.
Inside, buyers will find spacious and elegant cabins such as the more striking Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7-series, including massage seats available for front and rear passengers.
Audi has rolled out its entire motorcade of infotainment and driver-assisted technology here, as the A8 serves as a rolling display of whiz-bang features.
The cab IS SILENT HIGH with lots of luxury, all the best tech features are standard, comfortable but still up to the point.
LOW The style is somewhat anonymous, the warranty is less than generous, the basic V-6 engine is just enough.
THE VERDICT In the same way that a simple yet well-tailored tuxedo enhances one’s style, the quietly luxurious Audi A8 2022 is also handsome and looks expensive without being flashy.
Audi is stepping up luxury on the A8 for 2022 by creating a power-adjustable 22-way front seat with heating and ventilation standards across the range. Also standard now are wireless smartphone charging pads and a 360-degree exterior camera system.
The top-flight 60 TFSI model now comes with a Sport Style package (20-inch wheels, front lip spoiler, and chrome underbody cladding) as well as Matrix design LED headlamps and soft Valcona leather seats.
2022 Audi A8 EV
BMW and Mercedes-Benz will both have large, pure-electric luxury sedans within the next year or two. That model will join Tesla Model S in the full-size EV sedan field. But Audi this week said they decided not to go for the all-electric A8. In contrast, the German luxury brand will equip the A8 with a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of about 30 miles.
The decision to drop plans for the A8 electric ran counter to hints about its potential from former company CEO Bram Schot. Speaking at a management meeting in May 2019, Schot said: The next generation of the Audi A8 may be all-electric. It hasn’t been decided yet, but I can imagine it well.
Schot became interim head of Audi in 2018, replacing CEO Rupert Stadler, who was arrested on charges of fraud in connection with the Dieselgate scandal. Schot was replaced by former BMW executive Markus Duesmann, who took charge yesterday.

Audi development head Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler, speaking with Automotive News, said the carmaker had intensive discussions before deciding not to use the battery-powered A8.
Rothenpieler explained that Audi will focus on full-electric SUVs, which he sees as a growth segment – while large sedans are not selling well.
The anticipated all-electric Mercedes EQS is not a full-size sedan, having sizes between the E-Class and the S-Class. There are few details confirmed about the EQS, apart from the high-level specs revealed in the January preview. The numbers include a 100 kWh battery pack, 470 horsepower power, and 350 kW super-fast charging.
The BMW 7-Series EV is expected to launch in late 2022. It will launch first in China and Europe, according to Automotive News. So it probably won’t arrive in the US until 2023 or later.
Large sedans are generally considered to be the company’s new tech showcase, not big sellers. Germany’s large EV is likely to compete with the Tesla Model S, which was introduced in 2012.

Impressive passenger space is the hallmark of the A8, and the long-wheelbase ensures rear-seat passengers can be properly accommodated. The five-seater is standard, but the optional four-passenger seating package removes the rear center seat and provides a pair of power-adjustable rear seats with heating, ventilation, and massage as well as a heated foot massage function and a pair of individual entertainment tablets (while reducing power adjustment for front passenger seat so there is room for all of that).
Good materials are available in abundance, and you can order extended skins and woods worth of wood inlays. But like the exterior of the A8, the interior atmosphere is simple and not as fancy as the Mercedes S-class. Modest luggage capacity for a large luxury sedan at only 13 cubic feet.

Among the six-cylinder executive sedans, it’s the equivalent of a Mercedes-Benz S450 but only one-tenth of the speed of the BMW 740i.
Audi’s engine is very smooth but the power transmission is wide enough that no fanfare and noise suppression action can only be heard by the window facing.

2022 Audi A8 MPG
Although the EPA has yet to release a fuel economy estimate for the 2022 model, the lack of mechanical changes to the A8 suggests its rating will not change from last year. The 2020 six-cylinder A8 is expected to deliver 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
While we haven’t tested the 2020 model with that engine yet, the last one we evaluated on the 75 mph fuel-efficient route made 30 mpg. We haven’t tested the V-8 model, which has a rating of 15 mpg city and 23 highway.
The plug-in hybrid has a city and 27 highway rating, with a combined gas-electric rating of 54 MPGe. Its 14.1-kWh battery pack also allows for an all-electric driving distance with an EPA rating of 17 miles.
